Phonological rules for phoneme [ l ]

1. When phoneme [ l ] follows [p t k ] at the beginning of a stressed syllable. [ l ] is devoiced.

2. [ l ] is at the end of word or be followed by a consonant. This [ l ] is called dark ” l ” , that means dark  ” l ” never occur before vowel.

3. [ l ] is at the beginning of word and before vowel, it is called clear “ l “

4. Syllables ending [ l m n ŋ ] followed by a fortis ( voiceless) consonant such as [ p t k ] as in word “belt” / belt /; bump / bʌmp /; bank / bæŋk /; bent/ bɛnt / these continuant consonants are considerably shortened.

5. When [ p t k ] precedes [ l r j w ] these voiced continuant consonants lose their voicing.
